Self Defense Instinct versus step by step applications

Posted by:

Instinctive self defense response is the only way a human being can deal with immeadiate and highly stressfull threatenning situation.
The typical self defense training scenarios involve way too many steps. That makes it impossible to apply under stress. That particular concept is usually ignored in training.
Often times traditional self defense training recommends that people practice the steps over and over to develop automatic responce.
As a practical matter, most people will not practice anything. Even if they did, ...

Punching versus open hand applications

Posted by:

Traditionally there are punches used in a confrontation. That is what people see n the movies.
Unfortunately movies do not show reality.
It looks impressive, but does it really work? Actually it doesn’t.
The part that is missing is an explanation that the head is very hard. In other words the bone structure of the skull is comprised of thick bone plates to protect the brain.
On the othe hand, bone structure of the hand is comprised of relatively small ...

Self Defense against mentally unstable people

Posted by:

The need for effective self defense is greater now than it was for a long time.

One reason for that is the fact that more and more mentally unstable people wound up in the street.

Self Defense Program at Yoga Shelter

Posted by:

I just finished my seld defense training program at Yoga Sheler.

The vast majority of students were women.

They did very well. It is common for women and kids to learn quickly and be effective at self defense, because my type of self defense programs are simple and not based on muscle.

Again, great self defense learning taking place.

Traditional martial arts versus practical self defense applications

Posted by:

I had an interesting conversation with a lady about the effectiveness of traditional martial arts in real life situations, as compared to practical self defense.
She studied martial arts for about 4 years and then was involved in a confrontation. When she tried to use her martial arts, the resus were ineffective. As she put it: “It didn’t do anything”

I explained to her that practical self defense applications and traditional martial arts are two different things.
Martial arts are pretty ...

Lee Shaykhet Self Defense Training

Self Defense Tip:

It is important to have situational awareness.

In simple english that means to pay attention to your environment and to what is happening around you.

If something doesn’t look or feel right, there is usually a reason for that.

At that point the best thing to do is to leave and get away from the threat if at all possible.
